Description

The Aboriginal Education Incentive Award (AEIA) celebrates the hard work and determination of Aboriginal people who have overcome personal, economic or social adversity in their pursuit of learning.

Canada Post will grant awards annually to recipients from across the country. Recipients could receive a $1,000 award in recognition of their efforts to improve their life through education, if they have resumed studies after a minimum of 12 months out of school and have now completed one year or more in an educational program such as:

  • General Equivalency Diploma (GED)
  • Correspondence / Distance education courses
  • Vocational skills / Trades / Career development
  • Community college / University
  • Life skills / Social development studies


Eligibility requirements

The Canada Post Aboriginal Education Incentive Award eligibility criteria are as follows:

  • The candidate must be Métis, Inuit or belong to the First Nations (registered or not) and must be endorsed by a treaty or have a membership number.
  • The applicant must be a Canadian citizen.
  • The candidate must have resumed his studies after an absence or an interruption of at least one year.
  • The applicant must have completed one full year of educational/vocational or trade skills training.
  • Winning recipients of this award will be ineligible to reapply in subsequent years.

The number of $1,000 awards available varies from year to year.

Application deadline

Applications must be submitted by mail between May 1st and no later than July 31st of the current year.

How to apply

Applicants are required to:
  • Submit an essay that is typed and double-spaced on letter-sized stationery to a maximum of 5 pages.
  • Provide a letter of support from a community member such as a band counsellor, priest or minister or supervisor (as long as they are not a family member).
  • Provide a letter of reference from an academic supporter such as a principal, guidance counsellor or teacher (as long as they are not a family member).
  • Complete and attach the Applicant Submission Form to the entry.
  • Mail their submission between May 1st and no later than July 31st of the current year.
