Promotion of life - prevention of suicide

The loss of traditional ways of life, combined with other socioeconomic, psychological, situational, and cultural factors, adds to the particularly high suicide rate among First Nations and Inuit in Quebec and Labrador, especially among the youth.

This situation has led to the creation of the National Aboriginal Youth Suicide Prevention Strategy, a suicide prevention program specifically designed for First Nations culture and lifestyle.

Prevention within a Community

The First Nations of Quebec and Labrador Health and Social Services Commission (FNQLHSSC) may assist health and social services workers in implementing measures to prevent suicide and respond in crisis situations after a suicide has occurred within a community.
