• A Meritas Award in Suicide Prevention Given to the First Nations of Quebec and Labrador Health and Social Services Commission
Jun 16, 2015
Quebec City, June 16, 2015 – The Association québécoise de prévention du suicide (AQPS) has awarded the 2014-2015 Meritas Award for Partner of the Year to the First Nations of Quebec and Labrador Health and Social Services Commission (FNQLHSSC). This award highlights the exceptional contribution of an organization whose mission, among other things, is to promote the physical, mental, emotional and spiritual well-being of First Nation individuals, families and communities. It was awarded on June 15 in Montréal, during the World Congress of the International Association for Suicide Prevention.

Suicide and psychological distress are problems that strongly affect certain First Nations and Inuit communities in Quebec. The FNQLHSSC is sensitive to the gravity of the situation as well as the need for effective action and has been the leader for several years of an ambitious project that aims to accompany and support communities in suicide prevention.

“The FNQLHSSC has taken leadership by bringing together numerous stakeholders for this cause, which has greatly facilitated the implementation of a suicide prevention program centred on certain specific needs. It is fundamental to recognize this mobilization capacity and the efforts made to help a population that deserves all our attention,” said the general manager of the AQPS, Mr. Jérome Gaudreault.

The FNQLHSSC took advantage of the implementation of good practices in suicide prevention context to collaborate with other stakeholders, like the Centre de santé et de services sociaux –Institut universitaire de gériatrie de Sherbrooke. A mobilization strategy and a training program aimed at better equipping prevention workers were created and offered in four pilot communities (Listuguj, Wemotaci, Timiskaming and Mamit Innuat: Ekuanitshit, Pakua Shipi and Unamen Shipu).

The FNQLHSSC wishes to pursue its efforts towards suicide prevention by adding more sentinels to all the communities it works with.
